family travel guide: st. barths

bonjour from st. barths

set in the french west indies, just east of puerto rico, st. barths is a small caribbean island known for clear water, quiet beaches and a harbor lined with sailboats. this past november, team minnow traveled by land, air and sea to capture the spring collection on its shores. read on for a few of our favorite stays, meals and moments.

getting there

most families connect through san juan or st. maarten, then hop over on a short regional flight. the landing is memorable — low over the hills and straight onto a compact runway and children tend to love it. you can also hop on the ferry for a ride over.

if traveling with little ones, pack light and arrange airport transfers in advance. taxis are limited and rental cars go quickly in high season.

where to stay

cheval-blanc st. barth is great for families who want ease. direct beach access at flamands, large rooms and staff who handle all of the logistics. tip: reserve connecting rooms well ahead.

gypsea beach club is more relaxed and right on the sand. if you prefer a villa, plan a beach day here for lunch and shade. it’s lively but still manageable with kids earlier in the day.

where to eat

shellona on shell beach and close to gustavia. come for a long lunch while the children collect shells. it’s best earlier in the afternoon before it shifts into more of a scene.

le select is an island staple in gustavia. go for burgers and fries. it’s casual, quick and easy with families. no need to overthink it!

tip: keep dinner simple. many restaurants welcome families at 6:30 pm — book ahead in peak season and be sure to confirm the day of.

what to do

gouverneur beach is quiet and wide. clear water, steady waves. bring snacks and shade as there are no beach services. mornings are the best here.

rent a moke, a small open-air car that fits the island vibe well. it turns errands into part of the trip. reserve early and confirm child seat requirements as well.

visit in gustavia. walkable and filled with lots of cafes and boutiques. stop for gelato, browse a few stores and then stroll the harbor for a good reset before heading back to the beach.

tip: a few of our favorite shops include one-of-a-kind pearl jewelry from terre mer love and lolita jaca. also, a trip isn’t complete without a visit to a french pharmacy to stock up on all of your favorites — pharmacie de gustavia is centrally located on the main street across from the ferry terminal.

a few other tips:

  • stock your villa on arrival. many hotels can arrange grocery shopping in advance as part of their services.

  • plan one anchor reservation per day and leave the rest open.

  • the island moves at it’s own pace, so lean into it!
